The Pipeworks – Glasgow

The Pipeworks is Scotland’s largest gay sauna, at Metropole House, 5 Metropole Lane in Glasgow’s Merchant City. Spread across three floors following a £400,000 refurbishment in 2019, it has a 30-person heated spa pool, 25-person steam room, 20-person dry sauna, licensed café bar, premium cabins, cinema room, darkroom, cruising maze, and themed rooms. The venue is open seven days a week, with continuous 24-hour opening from Friday morning through to midnight on Sunday — one of the longest weekend sessions of any UK gay sauna. St Enoch Subway is a two-minute walk; Glasgow Central station is ten minutes on foot. Entry is £20 for members, £29 for non-members. Annual membership is £9, but joining or renewing on a Monday or Wednesday is free.

The Pipeworks is Glasgow’s only gay sauna and the largest in Scotland. Its Merchant City location puts it in the middle of the city centre, a few minutes’ walk from Queen Street and Argyle Street stations, and that central position makes it the default destination for men across the west of Scotland. Paisley is about 15 minutes by car or train, East Kilbride around 20 minutes, Stirling roughly 40 minutes, and Kilmarnock about 35 minutes. Visitors from Ayr, Dumfries, and even Inverness make the journey — for much of Scotland outside Edinburgh, Pipeworks is the nearest gay sauna by a considerable margin.

Edinburgh’s Steamworks is the only other gay sauna in Scotland, roughly 45 minutes east by car or train. The two venues serve different halves of the Central Belt, and for anyone searching for a gay sauna in Glasgow, a gay sauna in Scotland, or a gay sauna in Glasgow city centre, the Pipeworks on Metropole Lane is where you’ll end up. The continuous 24-hour weekend session from Friday morning through to Sunday evening is one of the longest running in the UK, drawing visitors from well beyond Glasgow itself.
